lyrics

Out of the depths I cry to thee:
Lord, hear me, I implore thee.
Bend down thy gracious ear to me,
Let my prayer come before thee!
For if thou mean'st to look upon
The wrong and evil that is done,
Who, Lord, can stand before thee?

Works never can God's pardon gain,
God’s grace alone availeth;
Our choicest works all have a stain,
The best among us faileth;
None guiltless in thy sight appear,
All who approach thy throne must fear,
And humbly trust thy mercy.

Therefore my trust is in the Lord,
And not in mine own merit;
On him my soul shall rest, his Word
Upholds my fainting spirit:
What his true word doth promise me
My comfort shall and refuge be;
And I rely upon thee.

And if it last into the night,
And last again till morrow,
Yet shall my heart hope in God's might,
Unmoved by doubt or sorrow.
So let thy people hope in thee,
And they shall find thy mercy free,
And thy redemption plenteous.
