about

When I looked up the words for this song, I found out that a scholar named David Highland had collected one hundred and seventy different verses going back all the way to the 1600s. So clearly you can sing the story whatever way you want to! The words in my version are based on a few of the older ones that I liked best.

lyrics

A frog he would a-courtin’ go,
humble dum, humble dum.
A frog he would a-courtin’ go,
humble dum, humble dum.
A frog he would a-courtin’ go.
He dressed himself from top to toe.
With a harem scarem diddledum darum,
Whipsee diddledee dandy dee.

He rode up to Miss Mousie's door
humble dum, humble dum.
He rode up to Miss Mousie's door
humble dum, humble dum.
He rode up to Miss Mousie's door
Where he had often been before
With a harem scarem diddledum darum,
Whipsee diddledee dandy dee.

"Hast thou any minde of me?"
humble dum, humble dum.
"Hast thou any minde of me?"
humble dum, humble dum.
"Hast thou any minde of me?”
"I have e'ne greate minde of thee,"
With a harem scarem diddledum darum,
Whipsee diddledee dandy dee.

What shall the wedding supper be?
humble dum, humble dum.
What shall the wedding supper be?
humble dum, humble dum.
What shall the wedding supper be?
Dogwood bark and catnip tea.
With a rowley-powley, gammon and spinach,
And hi! for Anthony Roly.

Now we're all in very good cheer
Heigh Ho said Roly,
Now we're all in very good cheer
Heiigh Ho said Roly,
Now we're all in very good cheer,
if we had some music here,
With a rowley-powley, gammon and spinach,
And hey! for Anthony Roly.

First came in was a bumblebee.
To play the banjo upon his knee.

Next to come in was the old gray goose,
She picked up her fiddle and she cut loose.

The next to come in was Missus Cow.
Tried to dance but didn't know how.

Mister Rat, will you give us a song?
And I hope you won't detain us long.

They all gathered round the lucky pair,
Heigh Ho said Roly,
They all gathered round the lucky pair,
Heigh Ho said Roly,
They all gathered round the lucky pair,
Singing, dancing everywhere.
with me Roly Poly Cabbage and Spinach
And hey! for Anthony Roly.

There's bread and cheese upon the shelf,
humble dum, humble dum
There's bread and cheese upon the shelf,
humble dum, humble dum
There's bread and cheese upon the shelf,
If you want any more, you can sing it yourself!
