about

This was supposed to be a very large piece for choir and orchestra, but it became a very small piece for voice and glockenspiel. The song is called "Taffy Roll Away", but the poem is called "Despair of Herod." I suppose it depends who in the story you think is happy.

lyrics

Taffy was an old man,

With a fine frying pan,

Taffy came to my house,

Hunting for a mouse.

Cut it up and fried it,

But when Taffy tried it,

Taffy heard a clock ring,

Mouse began to sing

Roll over, roll over

Pluck an early four-leaf clover

 Roll over, roll over

Taffy roll away to Dover.

Taffy started crying,

Something needed frying,

Just in time for lunchtime,

Taffy turned to crime.

Taffy bought a penknife,

Tried to rob a henwife,

Taffy was a bad thief,

Taffy came to grief.

Roll over, roll over

 Pluck an early four-leaf clover

Roll over, roll over

 Taffy roll away to Dover.
